So another month, and another free Feeder gig. Feederweb had 100 pairs of free tickets to give away, upon supplying the answer to the question “how many fests will Feeder play this year?” After a bit of debate as to whether T4 on the beach counted or not (I still maintain the mimefest shouldn’t) answers went in and tickets were won. Sadly, although having won tickets, a number of the board regulars’ can’t make it, too short notice, working etc etc and like ULU there was a plethora of spare tickets up for grabs. However, other than myself, Craig, Kev, Marcus, Alex and Si would be there, plus my housemates Stacey & Lindsey were also gonna make it down - both of whom had missed the tour dates, and as such were really looking forward to it - Lindsey having not seen the guys since the Roundhouse Warchild shows back in ‘06.
Other than the Feeder gig my plans for the day involved heading off to Hyde Park to see The Mongol Rally departure - ex work colleague of mine Rich was heading off in the Burgundy Beast (a Peugeot 106) to drive to Mongolia, along with 299 other teams. Aim of the game is to raise as much money for charity as possible, and attempt the trip in a suitably crap car. Vehicles competing include a London double-decker bus, a Gobi Ambulance, a Mini with a phonebox strapped to its roof and many many more. If you’re interested, follow the action at http://mongolrally.theadventurists.com/
As my bus back from Hyde Park goes straight past Koko in Camden, I’d already planned to jump off there on the way back, rather than going all the way home to come straight back out again. However, the Rally departure took less time than advertised by Rich, and instead of it being around 4 o’clock when I get to Camden it was nearer half 2. After popping into Costa to get a fruit smoothie, I go back across to Koko to see if the group of people already waiting outside includes Marcus or any other FFSers. It doesn’t, so I’m in the process of trying to decide whether to try and contact the boys and see if they’re in a pub anywhere to join up with, or just go do some window shopping when I hear a voice say “Hello Chloe!” Looking up I see a taxi waiting at the traffic lights right in front of me, with a certain Mr Dean Tidey waving from the back! Ever so slightly embarrassed there’s time for a quick “Hi, Hello, you ok?” before the lights change and his taxi drives off. No sooner had he done so than Kev, Marc and Craig walk up with Subway bags - and having pointed out Deans’ taxi to them, the boys decide to plonk themselves down and eat, before Si joins up with us.
Having queued for about an hour, I say “there’s a familiar looking trio!” Kev mishears me and asks why I’m talking about Trees, before realising that Mark, Dean and CeeCee are walking down the road towards us. There’s time for a quick chat and I ask Dean if they mind signing my Silent Cry inlay - he’s happy to oblige, and when I tell him he really made me jump calling from the Taxi, he laughs and apologises. Mark protests that Marcus really can’t have any more Feeder albums to get signed, but obliges none-the-less and CeeCee tells us they’re due on stage at Half8. As usual my mind goes completely blank about things to ask the guys, not helped by CeeCee having very reflective sunglasses on - I could see like 4 miniature me’s reflected in them and when talking to him all my brain can do is shout to me "there's mini me! and another mini me! and a mini Kev and a mini Craig and ooo shiny!" it’s most off-putting! As they walk off, Dean asks why we’re here so early. Kev then completely drops me in it by shouting I was there first (half true, the boys had been there before me but then buggered off to subway)… I try to explain the whole Mongol Rally/Hyde Park detour but I’m not sure the Feeder boys buy it… and Kev takes great delight in telling me I’ve gone as red as my new hair colour. Pants!
Anyway, doors are meant to be at half6, but email went round earlier in the day to say that if you were there by half5, you might get in early to act as an audience for some interviews. This duly happens, though a production person has to run around grabbing some randomers off the street as there’s not enough of us in the queue in time (they needed 30). So yours truly along with Kev, Marc, Si & Craig get to stand behind a sofa containing first 3 Hollyoaks people, then comedian Iain Lee and watch them being interviewed by Dave Berry and Peaches Geldof. It’s amusing enough although I hope I don’t see the footage as I no doubt look like a complete twat. Marc & Si get separated after 1 interview by the head guy, as he feels two Feeder tshirts next to each other “gives them too much free advertising…” (Go street-team!) but Iain Lee gets revenge by during his interview making a point of mentioning “the two guys in Feeder shirts here and here” pointing to them both. We also have the pleasure of Peaches singing Just The Way I’m Feeling to us, and 6 of us informing Dave Berry that the track on the P&O advert is Feeling A Moment (and not looking like geeks at all :p).
Interview over, there’s a bit of a cock-up by organisers. Having first informed us that coming into the interview would still mean we’d keep our places at front of barrier, they then send half of us right upstairs in Koko to “wait for the floor to be cleared”, but let some of the group who’d been queuing wait on the floor there. Those of us who went upstairs spot the Feeder guys enjoying a quiet drink in a booth beforehand, no doubt surprised to suddenly see an influx of fans, though Grant does respond to Kev throwing him the peace sign in kind. Koko then open the doors and get everyone to go upstairs onto the balconies, which are barely big enough for the crowds, and we manage to head back down and are first down onto the floor when they finally open up, so still get to the barrier, Taka side, bumping into Soph in the process. Can’t help but feel organisers opened doors too early - interviews had over-run, so tell people that, sort the floor out, move us interview audience across, then open main doors. Oh well.
Support are Infadels, and although not having seen them before, I really really enjoy them. They’re a bit more dancey than my usual tastes but I still really get into it, and the cover of Eurythmics Sweet Dreams is awesome, better in my opinion than the version I heard Annie Lenox do at Live8. Though why Infadels announce it as a Futureheads track I’ve no idea.
After Infadels, the curtains shut while they set up for Feeder, and we’re treated to a video screen of some of last years iTunes Fest performances before announcer bigs up the main attraction of the night, telling us of their 16 year history and 24 top 75 single hits. The curtains open to the band on stage, I get a nod of recognition from Mark and Grant looks genuinely surprised by the rapturous applause they’re getting before launching straight into Sonorous - which is just an awesome opener. We then get Pushing The Sense and Feeling A Moment and the crowd is already going mad, feels like the whole room is instantly into it - improvement on recent gigs where I felt the crowd took longer to warm up. Mark is waving at the balcony to his right, and I soon spot a couple of kids up there, looks like Dean’s son Elliot, Mark’s son Alex and Mark’s ex-wife are here for the show, and who can blame them, this is shaping up to be as good a gig as ever.
Air-drumming must track Come Back Around follows, and then Grant dedicates the next track to Mark’s son Alex - it’s Miss You and Mark & Alex are exchanging rock horns. (that’s 2 gigs in a row that are making me broody…hmm interesting new development of Free Feeder gig-going). Miss You simply kicks ass live, I can’t rave about it enough, just rocking Feeder at their best and joyous sweaty moshing agogo. It’s then straight into We Are The People, another belter of a new track live, and we get some good banter with Grant after. After a shout of “not bad” from the crowd (alluding to Grants earlier comparison of Koko to the Muppets Theatre perhaps), Grant jokes that they “still rock for a few old blokes” before saying “well…. some old blokes should stop rocking”. Asked by Kev to “name them” he refuses, admitting he’s dug himself into a hole, but would only mention that they begin with “R” - Rolling Stones anyone? Grant avoids any more awkward questions by going into Just The Way I’m Feeling, and we then get the “new single” in Tracing Lines - complete with some quite simply breath-taking boogying by Mr Tidey, much to our, and Marks’ great amusement.
More banter with Grant after shouts for Tangerine result in a bemused response of “every gig someone shouts for it, what is it about that song?!” Grant, as we’ve told you many a time, its cos we know you hate it, and we’re evil like that! Grant then says “well… we’ll play it at Reading” prompting me and Kev to shout back “No you won’t!”. Grant looks at us and laughs and responds “well… you’ll have to come to Reading and see!”. Sadly I can’t afford fests this year, so unless Mr Nicholas wants to shout me a ticket I won’t be there… so they’d better not play it ;)
Grant then goes into his new favourite cover version of Pixies track Monkey Gone To Heaven, dedicating it to Frank Black, while Mark looks a bit bored, saying “come on!”. It’s then, unsurprisingly, into Buck Rogers , and the usual enthusiastic response from the crowd. Grant introduces the next track as “being about always being away from home and leaving someone behind”, its my current favourite bouncy track of Itsumo (it’s the only way) and that’s followed by grunge legend My Perfect Day - I’m loving this in the small venues, it’s what it was made for. Mark obviously agrees cos he’s mirroring me, Kev & Si during the intro - one drumstick-clutching arm raised in salute, and then head-banging like a ’muther! Taka and Dean are also loving this gig, both of them taking turns to bounce onto Marks’ drum-rise before leaping off it, Dean taking out a mike in the process, the rebel.
Next up is “one from the new album” and joyous Fires - with Mark singing along to us, the crowd taking up the mantel, singing the last “she lights the fires then she goes, be-low” at Grant, much to his delight. We then get another “bewdiful” track with Yesterday Went Too Soon, something I refuse to apologise for going completely mental for - I quite simply adore it. Last up before the encore is Lost & Found, complete with Foos All My Life thrown in the middle, each gig the crowd are getting more and more into this and so they should!
Time for the encore, and only one track this time, Grant saying “they couldn’t decide what to play for the last track, but think you might like this one…do do do do….”. Of course, would it be anything else but Just A Day? Everyone (and I mean everyone) moshes for this. Stacey & Lindsey were up on the balcony and tell me after that the entire floor was going mad for it - usually its just the front and middle, but no, every person on the floor appearing to be moshing, awesome stuff.
Job done and a happy crowd, it’s off into the dusk and goodbyes to be said. Some folks have still got festivals to come, most of us are awaiting the October/November tour with anticipation. Cash permitting I’ll see some of you at Brixton, Loughborough and the legendary stickiest floor in the world that is Rock City. Bring it on!
time for fan power once more guys, lets flex our muscles and remind them why we're the best group of fans around, we did it for Shatter, now add your voice to the campaign to get a physical Tracing Lines/Silent Cry release AND a new track!
