12/6/08, by Chloe Yates
“Exclusive Announcement at 6pm” says Feederweb, so watching the clock and fingers poised over the mouse, I soon discover there’s an intimate gig booked at Proud Galleries, Camden. 400 capacity, 40 minutes and £6. That, says I, sounds like a plan, perfect way to offload the post-Feeder gig blues. And promptly snap up 2 tickets, Clare from Brighton taking my spare one.
Having made arrangements to meet various people in Camden, and train changes as usual changing all the plans on the day, I end up at Proud Galleries just after 6pm to collect tickets. As well as me & Clare, the gang for this one includes Bex, Darren, Marcus, fellow iMMa-ite Alex, Dan (who I’d not seen since Hammy 06) and Craig, who I finally speak to after seeing him at various gigs in the last 3 years and never really saying Hi. Having been very confused by what I actually needed on me to collect tickets (poor organisation from the promoters there), it turned out to be a breeze, id but no email prints required. Though the envelope with the tickets also contained a letter, congratulating me on getting tickets and stating that I would need to present said letter on the night in order to collect my tickets… right… this being the letter you’ve given me with the tickets…? Ok then. This was also the only time I saw mention of the venue being over-18s only - I know at least 1 girl was turned away because she wasn’t old enough, the promoters’ maintaining that this had been well advertised. Sorry, but it hadn’t, Feederweb didn’t mention it and the “email” everyone supposedly got… that would in actual fact be the letter I got given with my tickets then?! Is a great shame there was some mismanagement there, hopefully it won’t happen again.
Deciding not to queue, we went for a little wander round Camden for sweet supplies, sticking some Silent Cry stickers up in the process, arriving back at the venue for doors opening, and wrongly expecting there to be a fair few people already there. There were in fact 2, and when we got into the venue and saw the tiny stage with no-one stood there yet… well it’d have been rude to not fill up the front row. Sorry Feeder, the usual suspects’ down the front it is then! The blurb had said this was 400 capacity, it looked smaller than that to me, with a stage plonked in the middle that barely looked big enough for the 5 live piece Feeder now are. This was going to be good, even though the shoddy barrier didn’t look like it would stand up to much moshing…
Support Act were Runaway Sons (www.myspace.com/runawaysons) and they were very good, reminded me a bit of The New York Fund which is no bad thing. Quite country/rock/pop, enjoyable stuff. After their set, Feeder crew start setting up, and I spot literally at my feet a case marked “FEEDER Drums 1”, complete with faded Skunk Anansie logo on. So that would be one of Mark’s cases then… and I have Silent Cry stickers in my bag - Mr Richardson, consider yourself officially street-teamed! The crew setting up start moving Marks drum kit forward, and I realise that not only will I be slap-bang in his eye-line, but he’ll also only be about 2 meters away from me - time to make a mental note not to air drum! Set-lists also get stuck on floor right in front of us, and realisation dawns that there’s more songs there than a 40minute set… this is looking more and more like being a very special night. Some handwritten lyrics also get stuck to floor in front of Grant’s mike - looks like he doesn’t know the words to Fires yet!
The guys come on stage promptly at 9pm, Mark, complete with coffee cup, is right in front of me, and Grant slightly on my left. 2 massive Feeder/Silent Cry Deluxe artwork logos are projected on the back wall, and they launch straight into familiar opener Feeling A Moment. I spend most of it dodging the photographer right in front of us, fortunately he’s only there for the start, and disappears as latest single We Are The People blares out - this is much more epic live than on record. During this Mark also spots me, makes eye contact and gives me a wink and a big grin… brilliant, give a drummer an Animal birthday cake and then he’s always happy to see you! Next up is Miss You - already possibly my favourite new live track, can’t not pogo to it, and Come Back Around as ever has me wanting to air-drum like a nutcase - but that’s not a good idea when you’re in Marks eye-line and your rhythm is as bad as mine, so I try to restrain myself to head bopping instead… and Dean catches my eye and gives me the classic Mr Tidey too cool for school scowl/smile, hehe always makes a gig extra special that one!
Two of my favourites of the newbies up next with Itsumo and Tracing Lines, despite only hearing them a couple of times, they instantly get stuck in my head, so hoping both are future singles (my money is on Tracing Lines single 2 and Itsumo single 3) both are melodic rocking Feeder at their best - seriously, is Silent Cry going to be the best album of the lot? I’m beginning to think it could be.
Couple of classics follow with Just The Way I’m Feeling and Pushing The Senses. Mark seems to be suffering a bit, coughing, spluttering and slugging coffee back, maybe a touch of man flu, or the 18months out has left him out of practice, and the crowd in general seems a bit flat in places. Grant commenting on the projections on the back wall leaves him bemused at the lack of crowd response - though I guess that’s partly cos his mike was so quiet I couldn’t really make out what he was saying. Makeup of the crowd in general was a lot older than at Brighton, not a lot of jumping going on, but a positive response to all the tracks. Next in the set is album closer Sonorous - which is growing on me more and more, and I spot Taka’s eldest children at the side of the stage enjoying the show. Obviously impressed with the reaction on the recent tour; My Perfect Day is next, grunge old-school Feeder at their best, looks like this is here to stay for a while thank god. Dean certainly enjoys it as much as us lot, wandering over and singing along to Mark. I love that we’re getting ‘new’ old stuff, Grant, please keep it up!
Fires follows, (oops don’t mention fires and proboards!) and yes, Grant does take the odd sneaky look at the lyrics taped by his feet, much to our amusement. Next is a surprise to those of us who could see the setlist- Grant on a whim starts off title track Silent Cry, one I didn’t hear at Brighton, and wow, its ‘bewdiful’. It’s an unplanned inclusion to the set, so Mark simply leans back against the wall and watches Grant sing, while the two Deans join in with Grant after a couple of moments. About midway through, both Taka and Dean look at Mark and motion drumming to him…. “I can’t be bothered!” is his response - hah can’t knock his honesty then!
We then get the track that I’m so grateful is back in the set (please keep it in Grant!) Yesterday Went Too Soon. I really love this, and its as moving as ever live, and Mark amuses me by suddenly spotting his ex-Skunk Anansie band mate Ace in the crowd, beaming madly and confusing his techs at the side by going “It’s Ace!” in their direction.. I think they thought something was wrong before they heard what he was saying. Next up was Lost & Found, during which I relearn why it’s maybe a tad dangerous to be so close to Mark and in his eye-line… about midway through the track the makes a point of making sure I’m looking at him, headbangs like a nutter, makes eye contact again and grins like mad. I’m well aware I probably look like a loon at gigs...but ta for that Mark :o) We also get Grant breaking into the Foo Fighters track All My Life during this, great little interlude, works well but Grant, sing it a bit louder so more people pick up on it, then we’ll all sing along instead of just a few of us!
Last song time, of course its Just A Day, and of course it’s goes moshy mental. Time to test those barriers… and as suspected they ain’t up to it! Takes the 2 security guards far too long to realise that, oh yes, they’re tipping forward, and by the time they come to brace them, us lot at the front row are at a lovely 45 degree angle… was quite scary and how they didn’t fall over completely I don’t know! Shame the end of a great gig was quite awkward and painful, and Mark at least didn’t look very happy as he exited the stage. Still the band, as ever were great, and I can’t wait for Silent Cry to arrive on my doorstep. 40 minute gig my arse - we got a good 80 mins in a small venue for a bargain price, what more could you ask for? Thanks guys! Just enough time to wave at a few other familiar faces (Soph, ta for the tic tacs!) and have a word with Mark’s girlfriend Erika about the following nights iMMa gig (www.myspace.com/immarock), arrange the return of my tupperwear and to have the pleasure of Erika’s impression of Mark’s impression of me at the front at Brighton… oh dear… maybe next time I won’t be at the front! (yeah yeah I know, famous last words!)
